Steve Boyland is a UK-based vocalist and performance/sound artist. His practice, which locates itself in the embodied, improvisational voice, explores the expressive, energetic and metaphysical possibilities of spontaneous sounding and its various interdisciplinary contexts and spatial environments. Working both as a solo artist and in multi-disciplinary collaborations with other artists and academics, he creates live performance and sound installations in art galleries, concert halls, theatres and other public spaces in the UK and internationally. In 2025 he was appointed UL Adjunct Professor in the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick and in 2026, was awarded an Arts Fellowship by the Foro Di Studi Avanzati, Rome.
In May 2026 Steve Boyland will mark his recent appointment as Arts Fellow at the Foro di Studi Avanzati with a performance/presentation at the Accademia Vivarium Novum in Rome. Like Images in a Mirror, is a new piece for solo voice based on the philosophical texts of Plotinus in a co-commission with Professor Panayiota Vassilopoulou of the University of Liverpool
The piece will also be presented later in the year as part of a series of events to commemorate the work of philosopher Mary Midgley, in a joint commission by the Universities of Durham and Liverpool.
2026 will also see a collaboration with artist Sean Scully at the Beckett;Lieben 2026 Festival in Liverpool in the premiere of a series of live responses to the artist’s new work, Tree for Godot.
